This issue launches the "law of collective investment undertakings" series. This series, the idea of which belongs to its editor, Mr. Panagiotis Sakkula, will gradually attempt to cover more and more of a system of rules that tends to become autonomous in relation to the general legal framework, which has as its object the provision of investment services. This autonomy is rooted, in addition to the specificity of collective management, in the policy of the European Union institutions, which do not include the management of collective investment undertakings among the investment services regulated by the Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID). The series, in its fragmentary study of the law of collective investment undertakings, follows in some ways the process of 'salami-slicing' expressed by the harmonization of national laws, which is being extended in stages with a view to achieving the widest possible scope. This is the objective of the present series. Other issues will follow, to be published at regular intervals, depending also on legislative developments. These developments are expected to be rapid, with the commencement of work on the UCITS IV Directive, which will provide a new impetus for the study of additional issues, beyond those arising from the application of Directive 85/611, as currently in force, and the Greek Law No. 3283/04. The series will also cover issues of closed-end collective investment undertakings, which, as far as Greek law is concerned, are relevant to the operation of holding companies under Law 3283/04. 3371/05, as well as special form collective investment undertakings, such as the undertakings investing in real estate under Law No. 2778/99. We hope that the idea of analyzing the law of collective investment institutions in separate studies will be implemented in the best possible way, contributing both to the correct application of the relevant rules and their systematic interpretation.
